What is a valid referral?
A valid referral is a written document, signed and dated by the referring practitioner, which requests a specialist or consultant physician to investigate, provide an opinion, treat, or manage a patient’s condition, and must be received by the specialist before the service is provided.
Key points about a valid Medicare referral:
- Received before service: The specialist must receive the referral before providing any treatment to claim Medicare benefits.
- Must be in writing: The referral needs to be on paper or in a digital format that can be easily accessed (e.g. pdf, jpeg, png, jpg)
- Signed and dated: The referring practitioner must sign and date the referral. Referrals cannot be backdated.
- Patient information: Includes the patient’s details like name, contact information, and relevant medical history.
- Clinical information: Should specify the reason for the referral, including details about the patient’s condition and any relevant investigations
- Specialist details: Clearly identifies the intended specialist or consultant physician.
- Validity period: Referrals have a set timeframe for validity, e.g. 3 months.
