About A/Prof Angus Thompson
A/Prof Angus Thompson is a highly experienced consultant cardiologist with specialist expertise in cardiac imaging, heart failure management, and advanced echocardiography. Angus has practiced at Advara HeartCare Hervey Bay since 2019, with earlier appointments across Queensland, Western Australia, and international centres of excellence in Canada, the USA, and the UK.
Angus completed his residency and advanced cardiology training at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Perth with further specialist training at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, where he completed his cardiology fellowship with a focus on echocardiography. His early career was marked by strong academic and research foundations, including completion of the combined MBBS/PhD program at the University of Queensland—the first graduate to do so.
Angus served as a Staff Specialist Cardiologist at Ipswich Hospital and Senior Lecturer with the University of Queensland, leading the heart failure clinic and expanding his expertise in critical care ultrasound and echocardiography. Angus undertook a prestigious cardiac imaging fellowship at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, specialising in cardiac CT and MRI. Also, obtaining Board Certification in Cardiac CT and contributing to multiple international research collaborations.
In 2013, Angus was awarded a Churchill Fellowship in heart failure, enabling visits leading centres in North America and the UK to explore innovative models of care. His senior academic appointments include Clinical Senior Lecturer positions at both the University of Queensland and the University of Western Australia. Angus is actively involved in teaching, clinical supervision, and medical education at the Rural Clinical School and Hervey Bay Hospital.
Angus has published extensively across cardiology, cardiac imaging, immunology, and heart failure, contributing to high-impact journals. His work spans coronary artery imaging, CT-FFR research, statin-immunology interactions, lung ultrasound in heart failure, and outcomes in structural heart disease. He has authored book chapters in major cardiovascular texts and regularly serves as an invited peer reviewer for leading medical journals.
Throughout his career, Angus has been actively engaged in major clinical trials, including the landmark LoDoCo2 trial, and has contributed to national guidelines, Medicare submissions, and advisory committees. His leadership roles include Head of the Cardiac Investigation Unit at Hervey Bay Hospital, Associate Professor at the University of Queensland, and Director of Physician Training for the Wide Bay region.
