About Dr Charles Nelson
Dr Nelson is a general cardiologist with interests in prevention and imaging.
He graduated from the University of New South Wales in 1988 and has trained at St Vincent’s, St George and Prince of Wales hospitals in Sydney. He completed a clinical research fellowship and Master of Philosophy in cardiac imaging science at University of Queensland / Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane. He has several scientific publications including in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. He has presented his research locally at the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand meeting and internationally at the American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology meetings.
Dr Nelson has an interest in CT coronary angiography in which he is certified. He personally reports the scans of his patients.
Dr Nelson has also completed a 2-year clinical echocardiography fellowship at Hearts 1st Laboratory at Greenslopes Private Hospital in Brisbane and worked at the same site as a consultant cardiologist. He has also worked as a consultant cardiologist at Echo Services laboratory in Perth and at Ryde Hospital in Sydney. He has an interest in echocardiography including exercise and dobutamine stress echocardiography as well as transoesophageal echocardiography.
Dr Nelson has been in private practice as a consultant cardiologist on Sydney’s North Shore since 2004. A large part of his practice is devoted to prevention which includes coronary artery calcium score scans and CT coronary angiograms where appropriate. He cares for many patients who present because of a family history of heart disease or to assess heart complications of diabetes. Echocardiography, including specialised echocardiography, also forms a large part of his practice.
