About Dr Joseph Montarello

Joe graduated from the University of Adelaide with distinctions in both medicine and surgery and completed his basic physician training at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital before undertaking his advanced training in cardiology at the Royal Adelaide Hospital (RAH). 

Subsequently, as a cardiology fellow at Guy’s Hospital, London, he was involved in the evaluation of laser therapy in the treatment of coronary artery disease. 

For over 20 years Joe was the medical director of the RAH cardiothoracic intensive care unit.   

Joe sub-specialises in complex coronary artery and structural heart disease, and is the structural heart lead for the Central Adelaide Local Health Network based at the RAH. The structural heart procedures he performs include Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation, Alcohol Septal Ablation, Patent Foramen Ovale and Atrial Septal Defect closure, Left Atrial Appendage occlusion, and Mitral Valve interventions including mitral balloon valvuloplasty and transcatheter mitral valve replacement. His research interests lie in this area. 

In 2020 Joe was awarded an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for services to Cardiology. 

Joe is interested in all aspects of clinical cardiology and consults with Advara HeartCare at the St Andrew’s Medical Centre as well as the Clare, Gawler, Kingswood and Leabrook clinics. He performs structural heart and coronary interventions at the RAH, QEH, St Andrews and Calvary Adelaide Hospitals.
