About Dr Nicholas Montarello
Dr Nicholas Montarello is an interventional structural heart and coronary cardiologist.
Nicholas graduated in medicine from the University of Adelaide and completed his physician training at the Royal Adelaide and Queen Elizabeth Hospitals (CALHN). He was awarded the Bryan Hudson Medal for achieving the highest score in the Royal Australian College of Physicians exams across Australia and New Zealand. Following this, Nicholas completed his advanced training in cardiology within CALHN before moving overseas to undertake sub-specialty training. This comprised a 15-month interventional structural heart fellowship at Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen, Denmark, followed by a 12-month interventional coronary fellowship at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, Scotland.
Sub-specialising in structural heart disease and complex coronary artery disease, Nicholas performs a wide range of interventional procedures, including transcatheter aortic and pulmonary interventions, patent foramen ovale and atrial septal defect closures, left atrial appendage occlusion, edge-to-edge valve repair and paravalvular leak closure. His interests also extend to left main coronary artery intervention and calcium modification therapy utilizing lithotripsy and rotablator therapy.
An active contributor to the field, Nicholas has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals internationally, including authoring book chapters on transcatheter aortic valve implantation.
He is interested in all aspects of clinical cardiology and currently consults for Advara HeartCare at Clare, Gawler, Kadina, Kingswood, Leabrook and St Andrews Medical Centre. He holds a staff specialist position at CALHN and performs his interventional procedures at the Queen Elizabeth, Royal Adelaide, St. Andrew’s and Calvary Adelaide Hospitals.
