About A/Prof Paul Calafiore

Associate Professor Paul Calafiore is a cardiologist with a special clinical interest in valvular heart disease, cardiomyopathies, pericardial disease and adult congenital heart disease. He is a graduate of the University of Melbourne and trained in cardiology at The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne before further cardiology advanced training in the USA. He undertook an Advanced Cardiology Fellowship in Echocardiography at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation for two years. Training involved both adult cardiology and paediatric cardiology with special emphasis on complex, surgically corrected, congenital heart disease.

Upon returning to Australia, Paul was appointed as Staff Specialist Cardiologist at The Austin and Repatriation General Hospital, Heidelberg, as Director of Echocardiography. He introduced the use of Transoesophageal Echocardiography in Victoria. This technology was fundamental to the introduction of the mitral valve repair cardiac surgical program at the Austin Hospital in collaboration with Professor Brian Buxton.

Since 1998, Assoc. Prof. Paul Calafiore has been Medical Director of the Cardiac Diagnostic Services at Epworth Healthcare, Richmond and currently leads the Echocardiography Services. He was involved with the paediatric cardiology services provided at Epworth and was involved with the structural heart program with imaging for percutaneous intervention of congenital heart defects.

Assoc. Prof. Paul Calafiore has been a cardiologist with Advara HeartCare since it’s origin. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, Cardiac Society of
Australia and New Zealand, and American Society of Echocardiography.
