About Dr Athula Gunasekara

Dr Gunasekara is a highly specialised interventional cardiologist with particular expertise in complex coronary intervention including re-opening of chronically occluded coronary arteries (CTO) with novel techniques. He is skilled in using various devices and techniques for complex and calcific coronary artery lesions, such as rotational atherectomy/cutting balloons and intra-vascular ultrasound to facilitate coronary intervention and optimising results.

An Australian graduate, Athula completed his interventional fellowship at Westmead Hospital in Sydney and subsequently developed further expertise in complex coronary intervention, structural intervention and vascular intervention at the prestigious Mount Sinai Cardiovascular Institute in New York.

Dr Gunasekara performs intervention procedures and inpatient care at Norwest Private Hospital, Sydney Adventist Hospital and Macquarie University Hospital. He performs intervention to structural heart disease including LAA closure (watchman/Amulet device) and PFO/ASD closure. He also offers renal artery denervation for management of refractory hypertension. Now he ventures into TAVI and mitral clip procedures.

He is a Clinical Senior Lecturer at Macquarie University and conducts seminars and workshops locally and internationally.

Dr Gunasekara speaks Sinhalese fluently.
