About Prof. Alistair Royse AM

Professor Alistair Royse AM is one of Australia’s leading cardiothoracic surgeons and academics and is recognised as an international authority in coronary artery bypass surgery.

He completed his medical degree at the University of Melbourne and his cardiothoracic surgical training with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. His Doctor of Medicine (MD) thesis in cardiothoracic surgery examined the exclusive use of arteries as bypass grafts in coronary artery bypass surgery, rather than veins from the legs. An early adopter of the radial artery as a bypass conduit, he went on to become an international leader in total arterial coronary bypass surgery, which uses only arteries and no veins.

His research spans more than 300 publications, and he is the Principal Investigator of the multicentre TA (Total Arterial) trial for coronary artery bypass surgery.

Professor Royse has held senior leadership roles within the University of Melbourne’s Department of Surgery. He also co-founded the University’s Ultrasound Education Group and served as Director of eLearning at Melbourne Medical School. In 2022, the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons awarded him the Sir Louis Barnett Medal for his outstanding contribution to surgical education and training.

Outside medicine, he enjoys travel and skiing and has a keen interest in new technologies, with a current focus on artificial intelligence.
