About Prof. Christopher X. Wong

Professor Christopher X. Wong is a heart rhythm specialist and consultant cardiologist at the Royal Adelaide and Queen Elizabeth Hospitals. He is also a Staff Professor of Cardiology at the University of Adelaide.

Born in Adelaide, Professor Wong graduated in Medicine from the University of Adelaide before being named a Rhodes Scholar. He undertook a master’s degree in population health and clinical trials at the University of Oxford before completing a PhD in heart rhythm disorders. He subsequently won a Fulbright Scholarship to undertake a Master of Epidemiology at Harvard University.

Professor Wong’s core cardiology training was at the Royal Adelaide Hospital before completing cardiac electrophysiology training in the United States at the renowned University of California, San Francisco — the institution where catheter ablation was first developed and performed in humans.

Professor Wong specialises clinically in complex ablation and device procedures. He has a particular interest in new techniques for atrial fibrillation ablation. In addition, he is one of only a handful of cardiologists in Australia with international training in ventricular arrhythmia ablation, and the only cardiologist in SA/NT accredited to remove pacemaker or defibrillator leads. He frequently teaches other cardiologists new ablation and device techniques.

Professor Wong also runs an active research program aimed at developing new therapies for heart rhythm disorders. He has authored over 300 publications, received numerous grants from leading organisations such as the National Health and Medical Research Council and Heart Foundation, and is regularly invited to speak at international conferences on the latest treatments for patients.

Professor Wong sees patients with heart rhythm disorders at St Andrew’s Medical Centre and Leabrook and performs procedures at St Andrew’s Hospital.
