What We Offer

Cardiac Services Available

Different heart tests answer different clinical questions. Some examine the heart’s rhythm, while others assess its structure, response to exercise or blood pressure over an extended period. Your GP or cardiologist will advise which service is relevant based on your symptoms, referral details and any previous investigations.
Our Expertise

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our services, appointments, and billing.

Do I need a GP referral to make an appointment?
Yes. To make an appointment for a test, you will require a referral from your GP or specialist.
If you are experiencing symptoms or concerned about your heart health, you will need to first make an appointment to visit your GP. Your GP will assess your symptoms and recommend the appropriate tests. If your GP refers you for a cardiac test, you can phone your nearest Advara HeartCare centre to make an appointment. The team may request that you provide a copy of your referral in advance, or that you simply bring it on the day. Note: if you are experiencing chest pain, feeling unwell or have any other symptoms that are concerning you, please call 000.
To have a heart test at Advara HeartCare, you will need a referral from your doctor or specialist. Depending on the type of test you have been referred for, there may be minimal preparation, or no preparation required at all.
An ECG records the heart’s electrical activity at a particular point in time. It may be requested when symptoms such as palpitations, chest discomfort or dizziness need initial assessment. An echocardiogram uses ultrasound to examine the heart’s chambers, valves and pumping function. Exercise stress testing assesses how the heart responds when its workload increases, while a dobutamine stress echocardiogram may be considered when exercise-based testing is not suitable. Holter and event monitors record heart rhythm over a longer period, which can help when symptoms are intermittent. Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring records readings throughout normal daily activity and sleep rather than relying on a single measurement in a clinic. Device checks are used to assess implanted cardiac devices and confirm that they are operating as intended. The service required will depend on the patient’s device, follow-up schedule and clinical circumstances.
A GP or medical specialist may refer you to a cardiologist in Hervey Bay when symptoms, risk factors or test results need specialist review. Common reasons include chest discomfort, breathlessness, palpitations, dizziness, fainting, high blood pressure, a heart murmur, reduced exercise tolerance or an abnormal ECG. Review may also be arranged for patients with an existing heart condition or implanted cardiac device. A referral does not necessarily mean that a cardiovascular condition has already been confirmed. It provides the cardiologist with the background needed to assess the concern and determine whether consultation, testing or ongoing monitoring is appropriate. Severe chest pain, sudden shortness of breath, loss of consciousness or stroke-like symptoms require urgent medical attention. Call 000 rather than waiting for a routine cardiology appointment.
Hospital-Based Cardiac Services Access cardiology consultations and non-invasive cardiac testing through the Cardiac Investigations Unit at Hervey Bay Hospital. Testing For Different Clinical Questions The available services assess heart rhythm, structure, exercise response, blood pressure and implanted cardiac devices. Local Referral Pathways Patients can access Advara HeartCare services at Hervey Bay Hospital, St Stephen’s Private Hospital and Maryborough, depending on clinical requirements and appointment availability. Communication With Referring Doctors Cardiology reports and test findings are generally returned to the referring healthcare professional to support follow-up and continuity of care.
